Money has been a part of our global society for over 3,000 years. What started as a barter system became standardized through the medium of currency, whose function is the indirect trading of wealth. Money (or currency), at its most basic function, is the mechanism which facilitates the process of trade.
Historically, the first coin ever minted featured a roaring lion. The first known currency was created by King Alyattes in Lydia (now Turkey) in 600BC. Whether it be glass beads, clay tokens, cowrie shells, paper bills or metal shekels, currency worldwide has sought to standardize the process of monetary exchange for societies.
Inherent in this system is the symbolism, design and value of money in these societies. “Exchange Rate” seeks to investigate the role of currency in society and how the design and imagery of money reflects the cultural values of the society it serves.
