Artist Statement

Artist Statement February 2025 Diane Rolnick works with a painter’s mind and eye as a digital mixed-media artist excavating through rich layering’s of imagery. Growing up as a dancer and artist in New York City allowed her to immerse herself in movement and painting, which unifies her work today. Living in New Mexico for 29 years has influenced the artists love and use of the natural flora and fauna in her work. Scattered aging flowers on the earth under the pinion trees are photographed and intertwined in her pieces as a dance of the ages. Daily photographing on the Santa Fe trails every morning and filling her home with botanicals also incorporates the natural world into her work. Investigating human complexities, interactions, and the rhythms of life that connect with nature and place, informs how the artist thinks and creates her tableaus. Rolnick’s own history, stories, and struggles are situated in her work as she has internally focused on women and their struggles through the years to be seen and treated as equals. Working experimentally piling her images on images and then excavating to find what needs to be articulated is a process she loves to explore.
