Artist Statement

How do we creatively express what we cannot see? That is, how do we use color, paint and canvas to explore elements of the metaphysical – the conscious, subconscious and unconscious layers of our existence? In particular, how do we reveal the hidden corners of our mind through art? As an intuitive artist, I use oil and cold wax medium to delve into the seen and unseen through both abstract and representational techniques, building many multiple layers of contrasting thickness and color – dark, light, opaque, transparent, warm and cool. These layers can represent energy, thoughts, mood, emotion and essence, each when then partly peeled away – or excavated -- exposing inner thoughts and emotions through what was there before. My paintings are all about this texture, depth, revelation and ultimately story, hinting at what could be a past, present and even future. That which was invisible becomes visible; that which could not be verbalized becomes its own language, one of color, form, discovery and even surprise. Collaboration is also essential -- I believe in listening to both the paint and the medium, working with them to share what we want or hope to say in each unique work of art. And that message, if you will, is the expression of complexity and beauty within us and all around.
