Painting takes me into discovering the magic of whichever subject is before me, whether it is the landscape or the subjects that it supports.
More recently I have been exploring flowers, their mysteries and their beauty.
Getting lost in the process is a meditation.
It is both a calculation and a surprise. It is a journey.

This has been an exciting time for me this past year being diversified, using skills that I have enjoyed over the years. I taught art in workshops for 30 years and have just published a workbook, “The Unstoppable Artist”, which has now received 8 awards.
I still enjoy the grounding of color in nature that plein air painting offers as well as bringing my ‘boots on the ground’ experience into the studio to create abstract interpretations.
In addition to expressing subjects in nature, I am leaning more into the abstract figurative in my teaching. I believe that using a variety of skills keeps me excited, curious and creative.OPEN365.

"For me, creating art is like reading Turkish coffee grounds. A story is revealed as I look at the surface, texture, and color. Moving around the canvas, I can see the past, present and future of the creation."
Darlene Olivia McElroy has combined head and heart in her journey of creating evocative mixed-media paintings. Trained as a painter and illustrator, she has an obsession for materials, passion for dreamlike imagery, and love of new technologies, which she uses to immerse herself in richly textured surfaces, mixtures of old and new, and brilliant and subdued tones. And always, there is a face or symbol of humanity that serves as a guide into mysterious layers which challenge reason and draw upon emotions.
McElroy's exhibition record, which began in the early 1990s in the Bay area and Newport Beach, CA, includes numerous solo and group exhibitions.
Throughout her career she has made art for herself, while creating award-winning illustrations, packaging, and collateral for small companies to large corporations. Never content in withholding her knowledge, she continues to teach art, design, and computer graphics across the country.

When I begin to paint, I am all about composition and color.
I may start with a rough charcoal sketch or just start applying paint and going with the flow and mood of the day.
Santa Fe has wonderful light, sunsets and mountains so I am inspired by my environment. I show my work at the Houshang Gallery, Santa Fe, NM.

My artwork documents New Mexico’s unusual places, unique beauty & diverse historical cultures. I never run short of the inspiration it provides.
My intention is to engage viewers, so they can feel the sunny warmth of an adobe dwelling, be encircled by a breathtaking panoramic vista or introduced to ancient cultures & architecture.
I am grateful to have the ability to draw & record the rare beauty, atypical history & extraordinary spirit that is New Mexico.
Working in combinations of plein-air sketches, my imagination & original photos, I draw in a representational style. My media is lightfast colored pencils & fine archival papers.
I enjoy choosing from their hundreds of rich colors. I combine them in multiple layers to create specific colors and textures, then use various ways to blend the colors creating a smooth painted look. It’s very detailed, labor intensive & requires patience, but it also sparks great pleasure & satisfaction.

My goal as an artist is to bring the joy and happiness I experience in my life when I am painting and creating my Fiber Art, to my viewers and collectors.
I am happiest when I am creating with color - the brighter the better. Like so many artists, I love to go back and forth between the mediums that I work with. After spending so much time in the studio during the pandemic, I have really enjoyed getting back to my roots as a fiber artist with my 2 newest series called “Out of the Box” and "Weaving Thru Time".
During the trying times of Covid, I found comfort in getting back to my sewing machines and working with fabric and fiber once again. Getting outside the edges of my canvas was the small freedom I had to escape the boundaries I felt being confined to my studio and home for so many months. OPEN365.

I’m inspired by light and color, patterns from biology, geometry, astronomy, physics, quantum physics, metaphysics and the interconnectedness of all things. I’m intrigued by the mathematics behind the patterns and structures of living organisms, by the way the vibrational frequencies of sound can translate into visual structures, by the way the frequencies of spinning electrons create color and how color in turn emanates vibrational frequencies, by the mysteries of quantum physics, the mysteries of space-time and the mystery and wonder of life.
I currently work in 2 separate mediums: acrylic paint as well as in digital media. My acrylic paintings incorporate diatomaceous earth with gel mediums and are heavily textured with expressive brush strokes that add movement and energy, with color harmonies meticulously built from several layers of translucent and opaque paint. I create my own brushes out of dust broom straw to achieve the directional textures.
My digital images are what I call “digital drawings” because they start as pencil drawings on paper, which are scanned, redrawn by hand in Illustrator, then meticulously colored using Illustrator and Photoshop in much the same way as my layered acrylic paintings. The digital drawings are available as high quality Gicleé prints on a variety of media including fine art paper, stretched canvas and metal
